Fold-out map, 12 engraved plates with tissue guards including frontis with tissue guard & numerous text illustrations, publisher’s green cloth with bright gilt motif of the “Challenger” on front cover and bright gilt title on spine. Signature of prior owner on 2nd ffe, otherwise clean and complete. A Very Good copy.

 

The "Challenger" called at ports in the West Indies, Nova Scotia, Bermuda, South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, Friendly and Fiji Islands, Moluccas, Philippines, Hong Kong, New Guinea, Japan, Sandwich Islands, Society Islands, and South America. The “Challenger” and her crew undertook a long voyage in order to collect scientific information regarding the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean, in the hope that a telegraphic line of communication could be established between the old and new worlds. Spry describes the voyage from England to Lisbon, Gibraltar, the West Indies, Bermuda, the Cape of Good Hope, the Straits of Magellan, and finally to Spithead.
