Copenhagen, 1925, 1st Danish Edition. Large 8vo, 2 Volumes. Vol. I: 464pp., numerous (hundreds) b/w photographs and illustrations, fold-out color map bound at rear; Vol II: 415pp., Index, numerous b/w photographs and illustrations, large fold-out color map bound at rear. Half leather with marble boards, bright gilt spine titling, four raised ribs on spines and marble endspapers in Very Good+ condition. Internally with no inscriptions or prior ownership markings, tight un-cracked hinges, no foxing, folds or tears, maps in excellent condition.

 

These two volumes provide documention of Rasmussen’s five expeditions from 1921 to 1924 exploring some 29,000 miles of arctic North America. His famous "Great Sledge Journey" resulted in the collection and description of Inuit folktales, songs, and poetry. Although written in Danish, they provide a wealth of photographic and diagrammatic documentation of Eskimo culture and artifacts.

 

Rasmussen was also the first person to traverse the Northwest Passage by dogsled when he crossed the ice sheets of Viscount Melville Sound. Rasmussen also disproved the existence of Peary Channel and Independence Bay.
